Agenda

Welcome to the 2021 meeting of TOME, a five-year pilot initiative of the Association of American Universities (AAU), Association of Research Libraries (ARL), and Association of University Presses (AUPresses). The meeting, held via Zoom, is open to the public.

Introductions (1:00 p.m.–1:15 p.m. ET)

Roundtable Discussion: “Assessing the Open Access Book Landscape in 2021: Where Do We Go from Here?” (1:15 p.m.–2:45 p.m.)

As the TOME pilot enters its fifth and final year, the OA book publishing landscape in North America looks much different than it did in 2018. Initiatives such as MIT Press’s “Direct to Open” and University of Michigan Press’s “Fund to Mission” have set forth new business models. Meanwhile, the infrastructure for collecting, reporting, and analyzing usage data for OA books has advanced considerably thanks to multiple efforts including the OAeBU pilot project. This roundtable brings together an exceptional group of representatives from across the OA book landscape to reflect on the progress that has been made to date and look forward to a future in which OA monograph publishing is both sustainable and integrated into the broader scholarly communication system. Confirmed participants:

  • Christina Drummond (Open Access eBook Usage Data Trust)
  • Emily Farrell (MIT Press)
  • Celeste Feather (LYRASIS)
  • Jeff Pooley (mediastudies.press)
  • Wendy Queen (Project MUSE)
  • Niels Stern and Ronald Snijder (OAPEN)
  • Charles Watkinson (University of Michigan Press)

Wrap-Up (2:45 p.m.–3:00 p.m.)
